So Veronica Roth promised that if we pre-ordered 35,000 copies of Insurgent, then she would release a short story that she wrote for Four's POV that took place during Divergent. I was super excited then this was done with Hana for Delirium, so you can only imagine how excited I was for this short story.

Goodreads synopses:

A never-before-seen piece from #1 New York Times bestselling author Veronica Roth: a pivotal scene from DIVERGENT told from Four’s point of view.

I'm not even going to add a jump.

So I really enjoyed reading this because it was a nice quick fix for my need of Four and Tris. I thought that going to Tobias's mind was something that as a reader was really important because when things are first starting with Tris and Four we have no idea if the attraction between them is just in Tris' head or if it is something that is mutual. This scene proved that from the start it was an equal attraction.

I liked that she chose to do the infamous "Knife Scene" were Tris comes to Al's defense and takes a knife for him, literally. I liked seeing that Four did everything for her. I also found it delectable that he decided to feign boredom my scratching his eyebrow with a knife (Its not safe kids, but my mental image is just amazing).

There is a lot in this that can be spoiled and I would rather not do that to you, because why? Because I want you to read Divergent, and then become hooked and then read Free Four, and then become even more addicted, and then devour Insurgent only to become angry at me because you have to wait for the last book. In the words of my good friend Brittany "you're bad for my health because all you do is get me addicted to things." To which my response was "Good thing I don't do drugs." So please. Read. Enjoy. And most of all, Thank me for getting you hooked.

I read The Space Between Before and After by Jean Reynolds Page last summer and loved it, so each time the chance to read another of her books comes up, I seem to jump at it. I got The Last Summer of Her Other Life at Borders as it closed on a whim and her book Leaving Before it's Over was a Free Friday book for the Nook. So when the chance to review it for her blog tour came up, I happily jumped at the chance to be one of the special 10 blogs mentioned on the back cover of the book. (Not mentioned by name, but all the same)

A novel of how family happens—whether you like it or not

Elaine and Carson Forsyth have returned to the tree house—Elaine's childhood home, a cabin nestled high in the branches of two oaks beside a North Carolina lake—where forty-nine-year-old Carson has chosen to spend the waning days of his life. As Elaine prepares for a future without her beloved husband, their solace is interrupted. Carson's mother, Greta, has set loose a neighbor's herd of alpacas and landed herself in police custody. While Carson, remarkably, sees humor in the situation, Elaine can only question what her obligations are—and will be—to a woman who hasn't spoken to her in more than twenty years.

In the wake of Carson's death, Elaine and their grown son, Mick, are thrust into the maelstrom of Greta, the mother-in-law and grandmother who never accepted either of them. Just as they are trying to figure out their new roles in the family, Mick uncovers unexpected questions of his own. A long-ago teenage relationship with a local girl may have left him with more than just memories, and he must get to the bottom of Greta's surprising accusations that he's not Carson's son at all.

Any anomalies must be immediately reported and repaired, but Zoe has a secret so dark it will mean certain deactivation if she is caught: her glitches have given her uncontrollable telekinetic powers.

As Zoe struggles to control her abilities and stay hidden, she meets other glitchers including Max, who can disguise his appearance, and Adrien, who has visions of the future. Both boys introduce Zoe to feelings that are entirely new. Together, this growing band of glitchers must find a way to free themselves from the controlling hands of the Community before they’re caught and deactivated, or worse.

BEA Day 2

So my first real day at BEA was pretty splendid. Mom and I took the ferry over, and took silly pictures inside the "Reached" Bubble. We then met up with Kristan and her sister Jamie and from there we all divided and conqured. I shot over to Heather Gudenkauf's signing while my mom scoured the floor. I got to talk to a bunch of other bloggers who were waiting in line, like Jenn from Crazy For Books and Jamie.

From there I kind of just wandered the floor trying to get a feel of what it was like. In hindsight, I wish I had taken a photos of the floor to show you how immense this place was. And it was huge, and there were just so many books and people to meet. It was actually really overwhelming and I realized that I had gone about the whole day to start with very wrong when I met up with my mom and she had like 30 books and I had 1 from the signing that I was at.

Mom and me on the ferry ride there
I really appreciated having my mom there as a partner in crime to be sure that I hit all of the books that I wanted. She said herself that she would have to come with me next year for two days rather than one. I know that having had this been my first year I saw what mistakes I made and which ones I would make up for. I got to meet Ally Condie at her signing of Matched, which I know a lot of people were bummed about since it wasn't Reached, but I did get to take a cool picture inside the Reached Bubble.

My mom happened by the Random House booth and told them that she loved Rizzoli and Isles when she saw the bookmark on their table, and then they gave her a T Shirt that said Rizzoli and Isles on it. When I met up with her while she was standing in front of the booth, she told me to ask about it, but didn't tell me what would happen when I did, so I got a really awesome T-Shirt that day too.

The Reached Bubble
I was glad I was able to get my mom what she wanted which was the chance to meet Justin Cronin and get a copy of The Twelve. If we walked away with nothing but that book, I would have declared it a success. (But I was glad to get all the books I did anyway!)

People at BEA were killing me with their kindness, not just from Day 1, but also Day 2. I inquired about The Last Dragonslayer by Jasper Fford to Houghton Mifflin only to be told that they were out. While this was happening, my mother was sitting and resting at a table that they had for meetings so she missed this conversation. I told her and sort of shrugged it off as an oh well, but then the woman standing behind her reached into her bag and pulled it out and handed it to me saying that she got an extra. I was totally floored by this, and thanked her profusely. There are still good people in the world.

Sarah J. Maas and me!
Although we were late for it, I got to hang out at the Apocalypsies meet and greet which I regret I wasn't more useful with my camera. I met Gretchen McNeil (Ten), Claire Legrand(The Cavendish Home for Boys and Girls), Lenore Appelhans (Level 2), and a whole bunch more. I didn't realize that I was totally ignoring Kat Zhang (What's Left of Me) as I gushed at Sarah Maas (Throne of Glass) (and had I realized who she was I totally would have gushed at her too).

My mom and I wound up being the last ones out of the room other than all the authors which I felt bad about, but then didn't because both of us were just so exhausted and achey from pounding the floor all day. I do have to say that my highlight of the day was making James Patterson smile for the camera. I think if he were to write me into one of his books, I would be swiftly dispatched. (But he smiled!) (I have to add that photo later because it was on my mom's camera, but that image is coming soon. In its very own post!)

In total for Day 2, but really BEA Day 1, I came home with 81 books, that we had to lug all the way down to the ferry because even if we had 2 suitcases, and the rain, it was still 81 books! Of the things I learned, I learned that no suitcase is big enough, I need to study Authors pictures so I know who they are and I don't accidentally ignore them, like Kat Zhang and like Claire Legrand who was sitting behind me in line to get in and always ask for business cards.

Interview and Giveaway With Brandy Purdy

Let me start this post off by saying I met Purdy Online about two years ago when I stumbled across Vengeance is Mine which was the original tile of The Boleyn Wife. I sent her a desperate email because I wanted to read that book so badly and I had to find out how to get my hands on that book. Kindly, she responded to my email, and told me that it was published under the new title, and then she did something amazing, she offered to send me the book.

In that one moment of kindness, she made a lifelong reader. She not only sent me The Boleyn Wife, but also bookmarks to go with it. I still use one of those bookmarks and it is the longest that I have ever used a traditional bookmark (I was generally partial to ripped pieces of paper). I actually get really bummed out when I misplace it while on the couch reading (it only falls between the pillows). When I spent the summer in New Hampshire, I found myself excited when I saw her third book, The Tudor Throne on the bookshelves of the store. Naturally I bought it as my way of showing her that I still supported her and was interested in what she was writing.

So take this moment to get to know her, because she is a wonderful woman and writer. It will also behoove you to check out my Giveaway tab to see how you can find out all about this wonderful author.

Goodreads Synopses:

Sixteen-year-old Julia Whitmire appeared to have everything: a famous father, a luxurious Manhattan townhouse, a coveted spot at the elite Casden prep school. When she is found dead in her bathtub, a handwritten suicide note left on her bed, her parents insists that their daughter would never take her own life.

But Julia’s enviable life was more complicated than it seemed. The pressure to excel at Casden was enormous. Abuse of prescription anti-depressants and drugs for attention-deficit hyperactivity ran rampant among students; an unlabeled bottle of pills in Julia’s purse suggests she had succumbed to the trend. And a search of Julia’s computer reveals that in the days leading up to her death, she was engaged in a dangerous game of cyberbullying against an unlikely victim.

NYPD Detective Ellie Hatcher is convinced the case is a suicide, but she knows from personal experience that a loving family can be the last to accept the truth. When the Whitmires use their power to force a criminal investigation, Ellie’s resistance causes trouble for her both at work and in her personal life.

As she is pressured to pursue a case she doesn’t believe in, she is pulled into Julia’s inner circle—an eclectic mix of overly precocious teenagers from Manhattan’s most privileged families as well as street kids she met in Greenwich Village. But when the target of Julia’s harassment continues to receive death threats, Ellie is forced to acknowledge that Julia may have learned the hard way that some secrets should never be told.

When Elizabethbecomes queen, rumors rage that Dudleymeans to free himself of Amy in order to wed her. And when Amy is found dead in unlikely circumstances, suspicion falls on Dudley—and the Queen…

Still hotly debated amongst scholars—was Amy’s death an accident, suicide, or murder?—the fascinating subject matter makes for an enthralling read for fans of historical fiction.

The Devil in the White City

Author: Erik Larson
Goodreads Rating: 3.92 Stars
My Rating: 2.5 Stars
Pages: 447
Reviewed by: Nicole

I was drawn to this book because of the serial killer aspect, and I have to admit that I thought that the book was going to be mostly about the killer, Holmes, and his actions and victims. I was seriously mistaken though since the book talks all about the fair and the building the fair, and the events and people surrounding it.

Goodreads Synopses:

Author Erik Larson imbues the incredible events surrounding the 1893 Chicago World's Fair with such drama that readers may find themselves checking the book's categorization to be sure that 'The Devil in the White City' is not, in fact, a highly imaginative novel. Larson tells the stories of two men: Daniel H. Burnham, the architect responsible for the fair's construction, and H.H. Holmes, a serial killer masquerading as a charming doctor.

Burnham's challenge was immense. In a short period of time, he was forced to overcome the death of his partner and numerous other obstacles to construct the famous "White City" around which the fair was built. His efforts to complete the project, and the fair's incredible success, are skillfully related along with entertaining appearances by such notables as Buffalo Bill Cody, Susan B. Anthony, and Thomas Edison.

The activities of the sinister Dr. Holmes, who is believed to be responsible for scores of murders around the time of the fair, are equally remarkable. He devised and erected the World's Fair Hotel, complete with crematorium and gas chamber, near the fairgrounds and used the event as well as his own charismatic personality to lure victims.

Book Blogger Conference: BEA Day 1

So my first day at BEA was spend at the Blogger Conference which I totally loved! I got a lot of ideas on how to better network and I met a lot of great people. It was really awesome getting to have breakfast and lunch with some authors and it was interesting to see what other bloggers were out there. Where there I got to attend different sessions that talked about building community and how to write critical reviews.

There were a few highlights while being there, and one of them was getting to have breakfast with Justin Cronin, who I love love loved, and getting to meet other bloggers (One of whom said she recognized my blog!). Of the things that went wrong that day was my phone battery dying, and if it weren't for a better prepared Melody from Melody and Words. I tried to tweet my way through the day but after hitting 50% battery by 12, that wasn't going to happen.

While I felt I was able to get a lot from the experience, I have to agree with some rumblings from other bloggers, that the conference was geared less toward helping us and more toward how we can help the industry. While many of us are merely people who want to share our love for books, that doesn't mean that we're there merely to service the industry. I really did love to go, and I think that I will continue to go as long as I keep blogging. I enjoyed getting the chance to meet all of these great people.

Justin Cronin and I
For breakfast, they only had tea, coffee, and bagels and muffins, which was less cool. I had booked it from 33rd and Avenue of the America's where my train let me off. (For non New Yorkers, thats 5 long blocks.) I really just wanted a cold water because I left my water bottle at home, but alas, there was nothing for me to drink. While waiting in line to get inside I made friends with Kim, Pam and Emilie. Pam and Kim were there together as seasoned veterans, while Emilie and I were both new to this. Kim wanted to meet Justin Cronin just as much as my mother did (which is how I ended up at his table). We made a Justin Cronin Sandwich, which was great when he did come over to talk to us. We also got to talk to Anthony Swofford about his book, Hotels, Hospitals and Jails and about is baby daughter, as well as getting to talk to Jenny Han whose newest book Burn For Burn is co-written with her best friend.

Fancy Swag Bags
With Books Inside
Next was the keynote speech by Jennifer Weiner whose book everyone got. She was quite hilarious which I enjoyed. She tried to relate to being a blogger by talking about how she started her own blog and how Oprah was the first Book Blogger. I'll admit I was a little confused when she started talking about Oprah and what that had to do with the New York Times' crusade against her. She made me laugh and she took a picture with me and signed my book which was pretty awesome so no complaints here.

There was another panel before lunch which I missed most of because I was waiting on the line for the bathroom so I missed most of it. I was able to catch the tail end of it when the Erica Barmash stated that she will not work with people who plagiarize their content. That was a pretty great moment because ethics in blogging is very important. In between the panel and lunch, Amy, who was a publicist at my table gave me her books and then so did her friend because they didn't want the books inside of them. People at BEA killed me with kindness.

Erika Robuck and I
The lunch was okay, they had a vegetarian wrap, a turkey wrap or a roast beef wrap. This time they did better on the beverages with mini-waterbottles and sodas. This time my table only had two presenters, but one was the Naptime Chef, Kelsey Banfield, who talked about what was coming up next for her as a chef and how she got the idea for her book. The older bloggers at the table kept insisting to get Kelsey lunch even after she told them that she had already eaten knowing that she was coming to this. We also had lunch with Erika Robuck who wrote a historical fiction book called Hemingway's Girl, which I am really excited about. I did my fair share of research into each of the presenters, so I liked getting to kind of discuss her research and why this book would change my mind about Hemingway.

Extra Swag-Bag Grabs
At lunch, I met Jenn from Crazy for Books and Andrea from The Queen's Quill Review, and I went with them to The first of the two breakout sessions which was Critical Reviews. For the most part, this was great. One of the presenters (who I would rather not call out) wasn't quite as ready as another who had handouts prepared for us. The final of our speakers was a lawyer who managed to scare the pants off of everyone in the room that we would be sued for libel. What I took out of this was that it is okay to write a negative review, you just can't be awful about how you write it.

The last session taught me how to better relate with you, and that to do that I should include anecdotes about my life which means telling you about my niece and nephew who I can't get enough of. Hopefully this will help me build community with you, which is something that I recognize that I should work on.

All in all, it was a great day. I ended it with a very expensive dinner at Fridays, (where I didn't get carded, which was disappointing since I just turned 21 and would have liked to flash my shiny new id) and then I lugged all of my bags back home. In total I had 14 books including:

Those We Love Most by Lee Woodruff
Hotels, Hospitals, and Jails by Anthony Swofford
The End of Your Life Book Club by Will Schwalbe
Wordpress for Dummies
Sprinklesbakes
The Merits of Mischief
Lets Pretend This Never Happened
Hemingway's Girl by Erika Robuck
Then Came You by Jennifer Weiner(x2)
Darker Still
The Vicious Deep
Recipe For Trouble
Economix

It was a wonderful experience, and I can't wait to do it again. You will see in the last picture, some of the books that I got. I would up doing a lot of trading and then I wound up with two bags that people didn't want which was great. The tote bags were Penguin bags, and they were surprisingly sturdy which I appreciated. I also got a Kobo mug which you can write on with chalk as well as a book light that I can attach to my Nook. Hip hip hooray! This was only a taste of what the rest of BEA was going to be like for me!

Stay tuned for Day 2!

BEA

Wow is all I have to say. This was my first BEA ever and I loved it. I made a few mistakes here and there but this was a learning experience. I really loved it and I'm totally hooked and can't wait to go again next year! As eager as I was to get to sleep in, I know that I'm going to miss meeting up with my new friends in the morning to come up with a plan of attack.

I'm going to do more detailed posts on each day when I'm not totally beat from the day. I will tell you that I got all but two books that I wanted, which for me makes this a total win of an event. There were also a lot of books that I wasn't expecting to get, but wound up in my bag. I count this as a huge success, not just for the books but for the wonderful unexpected friends that I met with.

So for the next week I'll be posting about a day from BEA and then a review every other. This way I can tell you the most about what I did and who I met. That being said, check back to hear all about it! If This is your first time Dropping by, stop and say hey! I would love to hear from you if we met over the week!

I received this book from HarperCollins as part of a blog tour for this book. It has been a while since I read a phycological thriller and this was a great way to ease back into it. If you can really ease into those. It was a huge hit in England before coming to the states this July. Definitely not a book to read at home alone.

Goodreads Rating:

Catherine has been enjoying the single life for long enough to know a good catch when she sees one. Gorgeous, charismatic, spontaneous - Lee seems almost too perfect to be true. And her friends clearly agree, as each in turn falls under his spell. But there is a darker side to Lee. His erratic, controlling and sometimes frightening behaviour means that Catherine is increasingly isolated. Driven into the darkest corner of her world, and trusting no one, she plans a meticulous escape. Four years later, struggling to overcome her demons, Catherine dares to believe she might be safe from harm. Until one phone call changes everything. This is an edgy and powerful first novel, utterly convincing in its portrayal of obsession, and a tour de force of suspense.

Welcome!

This week, I'm going to be spending my days at the Book Expo America so I will not be posting much, but I did want to tell you a little bit about myself and my blog.

At Disney on Ice.
I am a recent college graduate who loves to read. During my time in school I realized that I didn't have as much time to read as I would have liked and so during the Summer of 2011, I went crazy reading all the books I never had time to. It was then that friends and family started to ask for advice on what to read and what not to read. That was when I decided to start a Book Blog after that.

I'm pleased to say I still get asked about what books to read and other reccomendations. This is my first year at BEA, and I can tell you that I'm super excited to meet everyone.

You can find out more about myself, and Amy, who also contributes to the blog under the "About Me" Tab. If you're interested in how I rate, I have a ratings tab, and if you want to get in touch with me, check out my review policy.

I don't want to limit my readers with what I review so I try to read anything. Obviously I do have some preferences, but I do like to try everything. So please, look around, check out the different books that I have here, and of course check out my Facebook and Twitter. Feel free to get in touch with me because I love making new friends and hearing from everyone.

So thanks for checking out Paperback Princess, and I hope you like the site!

The Next Week

I feel like I kind of owe you an explaination. I've been super busy between commencement, then my birthday and now I'm preparing for BEA. For this next week (until Thursday when I have a Blog Tour Post) I won't be posting, and here is why:

I am going to the Book Expo America which is a big deal for Industry Professionals. This is going to be my first year going, so once it became official that I was going earlier in May, I've been working overtime to make sure that I am prepared for this event. There is a lot that I don't know about it and I'm sure there is a lot that I won't know until I get there. But in the mean time I've been trying to prepare so I have more to share with you and so that I can get the most out of this experience.

If you could see what I have been doing you would be amazed. I've started making new friends already, and I'm learning new ways for me to make my blog better for you. If you have noticed, I've added a rating scale and a review policy along with a contact me form and a FTC disclaimer. I'm hoping that with these additions to the blog, I'll be able to bring you more books and giveaways and more information.

So I thank you for bearing with me as I go through this week. I promise, promise, promise lots of great pictures and exciting news and books! If you want to follow me on Twitter as I update what is going on at BEA. I promise it won't just be banter between me and Lexie.

In the meantime, you can like my Facebook page, and Twitter until I come back with a vengeance later this week. It will probably take me a few posts to tell you all about what happened and I can't wait to share all of this with you!

Thank you and I love you all!
